Hola Mexico Film Festival 2006 to launch for the first time in Australia
The first-ever Hola Mexico Film Festival will launch in Sydney and Melbourne in November 2006, showcasing an eclectic collection of contemporary Mexican Cinema. Fresh from the international festival circuit, the collection of films consists of eleven features and seven shorts especially selected to reflect the maturity and development of Mexican Cinema today.
The Hola Mexico Film Festival will be screening at the Chauvel Cinemas in Sydney from November 21st to November 26th and at the Acmi Cinemas in Melbourne from November 29th to December 5th.
“We are very proud of our selection of films for the festival which explore the richness and diversity of artistic cinema in contemporary Mexico, through comedy, romance, drama and documentary influenced film-making,” said Samuel Douek, Hola Mexico Film Festival Director.
The festival will launch with a special screening of Solo Dios Sabe (Only God Knows), a film directed by Carlos Bolado starring Diego Luna (Y tu mama tambien) and Alice Braga (City of God). Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, the film will be followed by Mexican entertainment; food, mariachis, and coronas - everything necessary to create a great Pachanga!
“The aim of this years film festival is to show audiences in Australia that Amores Perros and Y tu Mama Tambien are not flashs in the pan, as this year in Cannes alone, four Mexian films competed for prizes. We would like to show Australian audiences why Mexican Cinema has become the darling of the international film-festival circuit” continued Douek.
On 23/11 in Sydney and on 2/12 in Melbourne, the festival will present Pezzy Piñatas, sponsored by Pedestrian Group, a special night of short films with a party to keep enjoying Mexican life at the cinema. During the time of the festival, audiences will enjoy a Mexican atmosphere at the theatres, including the opportunity to participate in free Salsa lessons.
Douek came to Australia for the first time almost five years ago and since then has dreamed of enlightening Aussies with a taste of his home culture. To develop the graphic concept of the festival he has worked with a collaboration of brilliant Australian and Mexican artistry. Mexican designer Omar Fabian created the graphic concept of the festival by applying the painted image by Australian artist David McKay.

Mz Ann Thropic played a free all ages show at Route 66's Garage Prahran

The hugely anticipated 13 track Album from Sydney’s CASINO RUMBLERS will be instore as of the 5th of June, released on SOUND SYSTEM RECORDS label and distributed through MGM. This debut full length release from the boys shows just what a powerforce of Punk’n’Roll they can be with twelve of the thirteen tracks self-penned.  The only cover on the album is a collaborative project produced with none other than Pete ‘Porker’ of the PORKERS fame handling lead vocals and doing justice (and then some) to the classic Chris De Burgh tune, ‘Don’t Pay The Ferryman’ being backed by the awesome sound of the ‘Rumblers’.  Like most indie bands, the Rumblers have struggled since their inception around late 2000 / early 2001 and are slowly gaining an enthusiastic fan base in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. With the recent national tour with American Punk/Horror legends, the MISFITS, the Rumblers have made a lot more people stand up and take notice and now also performing in Perth with the tour, seems fans are now being hooked from W.A.

The album has a wide range of influences entwined within it’s tracks, everything from the traditional Punk, hints of Hard Rock, aspects of Swing mixed with the flavours of Psychobilly and even just a touch of Jazz sporadically placed within the horn arrangements.  The lyrics, although mostly reflecting the fun and humorous side of old B-Grade Horror references then turn around and delve into a more political and serious side, dealing with government lies and false policies with tracks like ‘White Lies, Broken Legs’ to the state of our environment like the track ‘Smoked City’.  The group shows it’s versatility tending to drop the pace a touch and swing out on a moody tune titled ‘She Walks Among Us’ that was released as an instrumental on the single, ‘Black Holiday’ back in March 2006.

Well now is the time to unleash this debut on the unsuspecting public and the choice of venue is the Corner Hotel on June 10th with a spectacular night of entertainment lined up.  The night will incorporate the work of Pinstripe artist, ‘Paul Q’ who shall be creating pinstriping demonstrations early in the evening as well as DJ Stu filling the room with a mix of Punk/Indie/Psycho and touches of Neo Rockabilly.  A very special performance from Miss Lilly Liqueur, Burlesque dancer extraordinaire, formerly of HiBall Burlesque fame, will be opening the set for the Rumblers whilst they play their haunting instrumental ‘live’. But leading up to the Rumblers set we’ll have Dos Gatos Locos opening the night performing a wild duo act featuring members from local Rockabilly combo, Hank’s Jalopy Demons. Next on stage shall will be another local bunch, The Ranch Allstars who will no doubtedly entertain us endlessly (or until they get pulled off stage) and to lead us into the Rumblers will be Geelong skanking legends, the Ska Vendors doing their best two-tone to get the dance vibe happening.

All sounding like one hell-of-a-night is you ask me.  And yes, you will be able to buy the new album on the night with other fantastic merch available. So get there anyway you can, just $10 +bf or $12 on the door (if available)and you can book through the Corner Booking office on 03 9427 9198 orwww.cornerhotel.com
